IEAM - Illinois Emergency Management Agency
In IL, laser requirements are regulated through IEMA (Illinois Emergency Management Agency). To be in compliance with state mandates, facilities utilizing lasers must implement a laser safety program. IEMA also requires an annual review of laser safety. To view the specific and detailed requirements, please visit the website.
- The class we offer is based upon laser safety practices outlined by IEMA and ANSI Z136.3 (American National Standards Institute).
- Please note that IEMA uses the ANSI standards as their primary reference document.
- Faculty teaching our course discuss laser safety in general concepts in addition to identifying specific issues that pertain to IL and IEMA.
- As outlined in the ANSI document, the LSO is appointed by each facility's administration.
- Neither ANSI nor IEMA identify a specific number of education hours to become the LSO.

The general qualifications, duties and responsibilities are outlined in section 315.90.
This document does not have specific time or hours of training or education.
To become a certified medical laser safety officer (CMLSO), one must take the CMLSO exam. We do not offer this exam. Information is given during the program regarding the requisite steps to be able to sit for this exam.
